Friday, August 7: Lee's Retreat
Gather in breakfast area and hotel lobby
8:15: a.m.: bus leaves hotel. First stop, 9:15: Battle of White Oak Road in the last days of the Petersburg Campaign. Other interpretive stops include Battle of Five Forks (four stops), Sutherland Station, Namozine Church, Amelia Court House, Jeterville, and five stops for the Battle of Sailor’s Creek. Box lunch included.
Return to hotel by 5:45 p.m.

Friday evening: on your own for dinner

Saturday, August 8:
8:15: a.m.: bus leaves hotel. We'll cover the last actions of the Appomattox Campaign, starting at High Bridge and ending up at Appomattox village in mid-afternoon. Here, you'll have another opportunity to visit the Visitor Center and bookstore (if you missed it on Thursday). Interpretive stops throughout the day to include Battle of Cumberland Church, Lee’s Headquarters, Battle of Appomattox Station, and Battle of Appomattox Court House. In the village, we’ll visit the McLean House, and the site of the April 10 meeting between Lee and Grant, leaving some time to wander on your own. Box lunch included. Bus leaves for hotel at 5:00 p.m., arriving at 5:45 p.m.

Saturday evening:
6:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.: cocktail “hour”
7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.: buffet dinner
8:00 p.m.: evening presentation: Ron Wilson on the Surrender at Appomattox

Our guides and speakers:

Patrick Schroeder has been the Historian at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park since 2002. He also works as an independent researcher, historian, and author, having written, edited, and/or published 17 Civil War titles, including, Thirty Myths About Lee’s Surrender, Confederate Cemetery at Appomattox, Recollections and Reminiscences of Old Appomattox, as well as a history of Duryee’s Zouaves, and a biography of Ely S. Parker. Patrick earned a B.S. in Historical Park Administration from Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, WV, and an M.A. in Civil War History from Virginia Tech. From the summer of 1986-1993, Patrick worked as a seasonal living history interpreter at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.

Ronald G. Wilson, a former Marine Corps captain, retired from the National Park Service in 2000 after 35 years service—at Gettysburg twice, Johnstown Flood National Memorial, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historical Site, Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, and the Historian at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park for 25 years. He co-compiled the book, The Appomattox Paroles April 9-15, 1865.
