The "Unseen" Civil War

You’ve done the standard battlefield tours. Now join us in 2012 for a unique series of custom excursions examining less visited sites associated with the major battles and campaigns. Our guides are among the most knowledgeable historians in the field, dedicating many years to research and writing on the specific campaigns at hand. These tours are designed to introduce even the well-read buff and seasoned, repeat visitor to sites and scenes usually overlooked on typical tours.

Our "Unseen" tours will entail a casual get-together at the hotel Friday night to hand out map packets, get acquainted, and set the stage for the weekend. First thing Saturday we'll board the bus for a full day outing (lunch included), followed by an evening buffet and after dinner speaker. On Sunday we'll conclude with a half day tour on the bus, quitting at noon.

April 21-22: Unseen Appomattox
Appomattox National Historic Park Chief Historian Patrick Schroeder will guide us to rarely-visited sites along Lee’s Retreat, and to important locations associated with the Appomattox Station
battlefield, and the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia.
Registration: $225. Includes lunch and dinner on Saturday. Does not include lodging (hotel information to be posted during the first week of January).

Sept. 15-16: Unseen Vicksburg

Longtime Vicksburg NMP Chief Historian Terry Winschel will take us from Grant’s Canal through Grand Gulf, and to numerous sites in and around Port Gibson, reserving a half day to explore lesser known sites in the city of Vicksburg proper.
Registration: $245. Includes lunch and dinner on Saturday. Does not include lodging (hotel information to be posted during the first week of January).

October 6-7: Unseen Antietam

Dr. Thomas Clemens, editor and annotator of Carman’s, The Maryland Campaign of September 1862, will show us, among other things, frequently referenced river fords and historic lines of march, including the path of the Cox Farm Expedition, and sites associated with the Shepherdstown Battlefield. We'll gather Friday evening in a reserved section of the Zodiac Bar & Grill (in our hotel) to set the stage for the Saturday and Sunday bus tours.

Saturday evening speaker: Ted Alexander, Chief Historian at Antietam National Battlefield.
Registration: $225. Includes lunch and dinner on Saturday. Does not include lodging.

October 20-21: Unseen Gettysburg

J. David Petruzzi, one of the nation’s leading experts on Gettysburg, co-author of the acclaimed, The Complete Gettysburg Guide, has customized a tour of obscure and little noticed sites in and around town, and on the battlefield.

MARK BRADLEY, author of the definitive campaign study, The Battle of Bentonville: Last Stand in the Carolinas, will guide us through Fayetteville, Monroe’s Crossroads (on the grounds of Fort Bragg), Averasboro and Bentonville.

CHRIS FONVIELLE, author of The Wilmington Campaign: Last Rays of Departing Hope, will handle the Forts Fisher and Anderson tours, and other Wilmington sites as time permits. During the bus ride to Wilmington and back (Sunday, April 1st), we’ll enjoy some Civil War films and robust refreshments.
